Chapter 5

The eventful week passed quickly and Sunday arrived before I knew it. After breakfast, I had a tutoring session with Tom, a senior at a state university on the West Coast. Tom was taking statistics to fulfill his exercise science major requirement and it was the third time he took it.

The kid didn’t bother to hide his contempt for the subject. “Honestly, I don’t even know why they made me take the course. All I want is to become a personal trainer. I’ll never use any math.”

I should have ignored the comment and started the lessons, but my old habit of motivating students died hard. “First of all, Tom, although stat is a branch of math, it’s much less abstract and more applicable to real life. It has very little computation but lots of quantitative reasoning.” I corrected him. “You have plenty of opportunities to use the science to analyze and solve problems you encounter in physical training or therapy. For example, you could use statistical analysis to determine whether a weight-losing exercise program is effective for your clients.”

“Oh,” Tom scratched his head. “Thanks for telling me, but I’m sure AI will take care of that.”

I was speechless for a second. I wanted to tell him that AI could replace him as a personal trainer as well, but I held my impulse. I was no longer a college professor. I was only a tutor. If I didn’t shut up, Tom might go for an AI tutor the next time.

The one-hour session felt painfully long, mainly because Tom interrupted me many times in order to answer phone calls and texts. I shouldn’t have minded since he paid me for the time, but I was frustrated because I had to explain the same concept repeatedly.

“Unbelievable,” I muttered as I disconnected the chat. I was eager to help the kid to understand his learning material, but he hardly wanted to learn. All he had wanted was to use me to do his online homework for him.

Shit. It looked like I wouldn’t be able to hold any tutoring job either. Depressing.

I logged out of my account. It was time to walk Mimi. Although Sienna was off today, and she told me she could do it herself, I decided to go with her anyway. It was a beautiful day outside—the storm had passed after lingering in the Houston area for two days. Going for a walk was preferable to sulking in the house or searching for jobs online.

I put on a fresh T-shirt and styled my hair. It would be the first time we went out to the public together. I didn’t want to look too shabby next to the beautiful woman. I checked myself in the mirror just before leaving the bathroom and decided I should also trim my mustache.

Sienna opened the door for me and grinned. I knew she liked what she saw from her widened hazel eyes. “Hi, handsome! Are you going somewhere?”

“We are,” I said after stamping a kiss on her cheek.
